Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, is an attractive challenge for trekkers worldwide. But if you're a beginner, you might wonder if this trek suits you. In this guide, we'll answer some of the most common questions about the climb, including how long it takes, how difficult it is, and the costs involved.

Can a beginner climb Mount Toubkal?

Yes, beginners can climb Mount Toubkal. Though it's a steep and strenuous hike, the trek does not require technical climbing skills. Even first-time trekkers can reach the summit with reasonable fitness and some preparation. Hiring a local guide is mandatory. How long does it take to trek Mount Toubkal?

A standard trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal typically takes two days:

  • Day 1: Start from Imlil and hike to the Toubkal Refuge for 5-6 hours, passing through Berber villages.

How difficult is climbing Toubkal?

Climbing Mount Toubkal is considered moderately difficult. The main challenges come from the altitude and the steep, rocky terrain. While it’s not a technical climb, the high altitude (4,167 meters or 13,671 feet) can make the trek more strenuous. Some trekkers may experience altitude sickness, so taking it slow, staying hydrated, and allowing time to acclimatize is essential.

The best time to trek Toubkal is between June and November when the weather is milder. In the winter, snow and ice may cover the trails, making the ascent more difficult and requiring specialized gear like crampons.
